The calm before the storm, the quiet before the war, was broken. Smashed. With the parlance ended, all dreams of peace had gone with it. War had now broken, the second in so many years. The queen sighed heavily as she reentered her command tent, why did this bother her so? She had marched south with forty thousand men at arms, this had always been a possibility. Indeed it had been a probability, and before leaving the capital, she had be strident in her desire to stamp out this rebellion before it could begin. Why was she second guessing herself now?
<p>
Elissa gripped the war table as if stabilising herself as the ground distinctly shook as explosions bombarded the ancient fortress of Ostagar. The Starkhaven apostates were doing their job. Well, if that racket was anything to go by. Were they not yet more proof that the had expected this all along, deep down at least. Elissa Cousland had desired peace - but Anora had not. Anora Mac Tir had chosen violence, destruction and death, and now violence, destruction and death would chose her. Elissa would stamp out this Mac Tir revolt, suppress any dissent to her and Alistair's rule with an iron fist that matched her will and determination.
<p>
"Ah, Lord Hereward" Elissa said, looking up from the war table at her younger cousin. After few seconds, studying the mapped table, the Queen took her hands from the oak table, and tilted her head to her guardsmen, "leave us, please."
<p>
The men did as they were bid as the Queen passed across the tent and perched on the edge of her chair. In the presence of Hereward her emotions had become mixed. Although her fury had softened, the queen had not been happy at his attitude as they parlayed with the dowager queen. Suggesting her to be a warmonger was bad enough, but openly showing balance between the two factions. His place was not a neutral arbiter - it was as her cousin and vassel. A loyal servant of the Cousland Crown. In showing such unmeasured partiality, he had called into question his own loyalty. He and Anora had been friends and children, she was not about to forget that. Honestly the Queen wasn't willing to believe that he'd betray her, but if he was called upon to strike at Anora personally, could he now be relied upon to do it? Especially knowing what Anora had asked of him?
<p>
"Would you care to explain the fuck you were playing at?" Elissa said furiously, now confident that her men were out of earshot. Her calm demeanor had vanished, and her tone was of a fury to match the scowl that sat upon her face. "How dare you second guess me like that."
<p>
Elissa took a brief pause as if stopping to let Hereward answer her, but continued her flow of anger before he could speak, "How dare you second guess your Queen like that. Before peers and enemies" she took another moment's pause to pour from a flask, deliberately ignoring the second cup she had placed before her. "Did you not consider the terms I offered that dirty traitor fair? Perhaps you could explain what terms you might have offered? Fuck it Hereward, who on the Maker's earth appointed you arbiter? What on the Makers earth possessed you to speak out against me like that?"

"I am the daughter of Ferelden's greatest general. Who do you think ruled this nation for the last five years? Cailan? I am what this country needs, not some untrained king who does not even want the throne."
<p>
They were Anora's words almost two years ago. Back then they were arguably sensible, uttered now they barely less than a chilling threat. Anora's refusal to renounce her claim, whatever claim a consort has, were an early warning of her attitude toward the throne. So much like her father's, both Mac Tirs considered they were best placed to do the job the Maker has in mind. Well Loghain certainly wasn't best placed, and Anora? Her rebellion answers that. Arl Eamon had called for her execution after she refused to accept the Landsmeet decision. In his mercy Alistair had spared her life and exiled her on pain of death. Elissa had agreed with Eamon, it was too merciful. Now unfortunately, mercy was an option that must once last be considered.
<p>
I Elissa Cousland am Ferelden's greatest general now. And I am what this country needs.
<p>
After the Queen had musted what forces she could, the Royal Army had forced marched to Ostagar to head of any rebellion before it could begin. Support among the northern nobles had been greater than anticipated, more than 40,000 men, infantry, knights and cavalry had answered the muster. Lady Primeveire, Elissa's closest advisor... the women she'd come to informally term the queen's-hand, had been asked to see that any and all of Anora's agents along the Imperial Highway had been murdered before they could bring word to the Pretender of the size and speed of the army heading her way. It wouldn't be long before they found out whether this endeavour had been successful.
<p>
Elissa dismounted her white stead with a clank. She was dressed in silver plate, adorned with Cousland heraldry proudly embroidered on the breastplate, and accoutrements of black lace to maintain a touch of femininity. She was no armchair queen like most. Elissa Cousland was a warrior who had won Alistair and her family power by blood and military strategy, not just political maneuvering at the Landsmeet. This was how she would keep it.
<p>
Squelching through the mud gave a gentle warning of what kind of battle this would be, the queen glanced over at the ruins of the Fortress of Ostagar as thunder rumbled and lightening struck in the backdrop. "A foreboding sight." Elissa muttered to her guardsmen Ser Jace Dryden who nodded silently. As they stepped onto the crimson carpet placed outside the Royal tent, she lifted her helm and passed it to her young squire, Elissa stepped with grace into the tent as her Ser Jace took his position between other assembled guards, in the passage to the tent's regal entrance.
<p>
"Your Majesty" came a collective murmur from Elissa's closest advisors who'd assembled in the hasely prepared war-room.
<p>
"So it begins." Elissa murmured somberly, with both hands she lent upon the table and surveyed the map of Ostagar and it's surrounding lands. "Let's let these rebels know that we are here." A nervous smile now adorning her face, she nodded gently to her squire who speedily clambered out of the tent.
<p>
The assembled men had been prepared for the sign to move into the sight of Ostagar. Ss well as a show of force Elissa had wanted a strong show of morale from her men, it was to be a warning to Anora and the rebels as to what they were facing. With a dim hoot from a number of bugle, five giant beacons were set ablaze few Mages Elissa had managed to borrow from the Chantry. With that the Royal Artillery Band began playing, and the assembled Royal Army began marching into sight of the mighty fortress. The blue and white laurel heraldry of the Cousland family held aloft by the honoured standard bearers, were glowed brightly in the torchlight "The Maker be good that the laurel reef might strangle the wyvern and it's insurgency before this could turn to full scale war."
<p>
"I prepared this missive" Elissa said taking a scroll from her breaches, "an offer of parlance before this comes to battle."

<center></center>

Elissa turned from her nobles and handed it to the withered looking eleven messenger standing before her, "take that to the fortress and place it in Anora's hand yourself."
<p>
"Yes, my Qu.." he started.
<p>
"Anora's hand. Nobody elses." Elissa stressed, looking the elf directly in the eye. "Tread carefully, there's a good fellow. You know how this works, if they do not blindfold you, they might try to mislead you. Take no heed of her forces, I want no misinformation." With a bow, the man nodded and left the tent.
<p>
"Have you heard from your operatives?" Elissa turned to face Primeveire, "did they find and kill many of Anora's scouts... any?" Her voice was steady, as it had to be. Whatever emotions she was feeling, strength and confidence were the only one's that her men should see. A general... a queen, couldn't be anything else.

Queen Elissa made great strides as she made her way to the throne room. It was that time of the week again, the halls of power were bustling as nobles from across the kingdom gathered for the commoners and noblemen alike who came to make their petitions to the crown. By ancient tradition this was the job of the monarch, Ferelden’s King. But as with the previous monarch, power fell in to the hands of the queen consort, though unlike with the former Queen Anora, statues had been signed that effectively gave Elissa co-regency with her husbands.
<p>
The Queen was dressed elegantly in a crimson gown, lined with intricate golden lace and tiny gem stones. Upon her head sat the silver and diamond crown worn by all Ferelden queen’s since Calanhad unified the kingdom. There was no doubt that since the Oresian occupation, fashions in Ferelden had advanced, significantly. Ellisa seldom saw a noble at court dressed in leather or furs. Thankfully it had not progressed to the ostentatious and rather ridiculous Orlesian designs, rather following a simpler, and as Elissa felt, more elegant design of the kind widely seen in the Free Marches, Ferelden’s largest trading partner.
<p>
As expected, at the base of the dais stood Arl Eamon of Redcliff, Ferelden’s esteemed Lord Chancellor, “Lord Chancellor!” Elissa exclaimed, “Did you hear… Brother Genetivi has finally agreed to take on the role of chancellor at the University of Ferelden, when it opens.” The university had become a pet project of Elissa’s, having ironically inherited the plans from her predecessor, who was equally as keen on it. The crusade of modernisation couldn’t simply be political; it had to follow all possible routes. Academia was one of the most important, Ferelden could not afford to be left behind. Genetivi’s acceptance earlier in the morning had left an indelible smile imprinted on the queen’s face; she’d been trying to persuade him to accept for months now. That’ll be one in the eye for the Orlesians.
<p>
“That’s good news, your Majesty” Eamon bowed gracefully as he replied in a tone somewhat more dour than Elissa had hoped. “I know you’ve been working on him for some time now.”
<p>
“He’s actually leaving his lecture series in Val Royaux early, to take up the position. I wish I could see the look on the faces of the imperial court when they find out”
<p>
“They will be annoyed for sure, your majesty. I understand that Celene herself is a patron of the University of Orlais, she’ll no doubt be disappointed to lose their most celebrated lecturer” Eamon agreed.
<p>
“Agreed. Who’ve we got this morning then Eamon? I hear Arl Wulff is back seeking more money for West Hills” Elissa said with a heavy sigh, I could do without seeing his face today. The queen climbed the steps of the dais to take her seat on Alistair’s throne, stood either side with heavy blue plate bearing the laurel wreath of the Cousland family, beside them two royal guards baring the heraldry of the Therin family.
<p>
“Actually, your majesty, the King has decided he will be holding court this morning.”
<p>
You mean you’ve convinced him to hold court. “Oh, he has?” Elissa wasn’t fooled, she knew full well that Eamon wanted Alistair to take on the reigns of King, rather than she. A Therinite to the end, Elissa knew that he would be grieved when the Cousland family eventually took up the throne in name, as well as fact. “Last I heard he had left the palace. Visiting some orphaned children, making personal appearances”
<p>
“He promised he would be back for eleven” Eamon insisted.
<p>
“How novel, it’s not usually Alistair’s thing” Elissa feigned surprise, and turned and snapped her fingers at one of the stewards standing idle, who hastily brought a council seat forward and placed it to the right of the throne. “At least the seats more comfortable” the queen mused as she sat upon the red cushioned seat, normally sat on by the Lord Chancellor when the crown parleyed with its council.

History
<p>
Hero of Ferelden - A fine title, but an inaccurate one...
<p>
Elissa Cousland had united a divided nation... two in fact, brought allies, rivals and enemies together to fight the Darkspawn, lead the final charge against the Fifth Blight, and crucially the one who slew the Archdemon. But these were not acts performed alone, such an idea was lunacy. Elissa have been dead in a ditch, or hanging above some castle as a warning, had it not been for the equal devotion of six other heroes. Assassins, Wardens, Priests and Mages. All of them were heroes... all deserved to be called Heroes of Ferelden. Alas, leadership makes one a focal point. And being 'the Hero' had made Elissa Cousland the symbol she never wanted to be.
<p>
At the end of the Fifth Blight Ellissa married Alistair, the man she placed on the throne after Loghain and Anora were removed from power, and was crowned Queen of Ferelden shortly after. Despite rumours to the contrary, Elissa Cousland did truly love Alistair, she had done before monarchy ever became a prospect, still that didn't allow the rumours to dissipate. Alistair was accused by many to be a fraud, a puppet to remove Anora, with a pliable man who would allow Ellissa and Eamon to exercise power.
<p>
The rumours were not helped by Elissa's consolidation of Cousland power and authority. The Blight and the Civil War had left many positions of senior nobility open, and nearly all of the most senior ones had been filled by members of the Cousland family, including Elissa Cousland herself. Always haunted by the massacre of her family, Ellissa initially saw it as a precautionary measure - to never let her family be weakened again.
<p>
Meer months after the controversy first reared it's ugly head, Elissa was called to Amaranthine by the First Warden to serve as Ferelden's Commander of the Grey. There seemed to be a Sixth Blight brewing... there was never any question of her acceptance.
<p>
Personality and traits
<p>
Oft described as a remarkable women, Elissa Cousland is a charismatic leader, a skilled administrator, and an exceptional strategist and tactician. That's forgetting her talent with swords that brought her to the forefront of Ferelden's view. To many Fereldan these traits have resulted in her being viewed as infallible... that she is incapable of fault or mistake, a fact that can be made obvious by her own misjudgment the nobles of Ferelden would have of her controversial and radical reforms.
